Essential January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Businesses and Self-Employed

As January 2026 approaches, businesses, employers, farmers, and fishermen must prepare for several critical tax deadlines. With proactive planning, you can ensure compliance and steer clear of penalties.

January 15 - Employer’s Monthly Tax Obligations

If the monthly deposit rules apply to your business, January 15 is the deadline to deposit Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes for December 2025. Moreover, employers must make their nonpayroll withholding deposits for December by this date if subject to the monthly rule. Remember, all employment tax deposits should be done electronically, except if you have a deposit liability under $2,500 for the return period. In such cases, you may pay quarterly or annually with your tax return.

January 15 - Important Notice for Farmers and Fishermen

If you’re a farmer or fisherman, ensure to pay your estimated tax for 2025 using Form 1040-ES by January 15. Although you have until April 15 to file your 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR), failing to pay estimated taxes by the January deadline requires filing your return and settling any tax due by March 2, 2026, to avoid penalties.

Weekend and Holiday Adjustments

If a tax deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, it automatically extends to the subsequent business day that isn’t a holiday.

Disaster Area Filing Extensions

If a geographic location is declared a disaster area, filing deadlines are extended. For details on designated areas and extension dates, visit the following websites:
